A battery-powered device intended to compensate for impaired hearing by transmitting sound vibrations through the teeth into the skull to the inner ear. It typically consists of a microphone/processor contained in a case worn behind-the-ear (BTE) which receives sound waves and converts them into electrical signals sent wirelessly to a removable receiver/transducer unit held in place on one or a small group of molar/premolar teeth, and converted into sound vibrations conducted through the teeth. A programmer and associated software is typically provided to enable an audiologist to customize settings.
